The Ten Cruelest Things Joss Whedon Has Done To His Characters
This list is basically the list of things that made me cry my eyes out watching TV/DVD.
#9, kids.
“… But in typical TV style, happy couples make for boring non-drama and in a haste — perhaps borne of looming cancellation — the beautiful Bennett was dispatched in a moment of shocking brutality just as the simmering attraction between herself and Topher had finally revealed itself.”

#20: Nerd Love… Ended
Over the years, Joss Whedon has become infamous for killing happy relationships between his characters. The budding relationship between (spoiler) Topher Brink and Bennett Halverson is a prime example. Both characters have serious social issues, but they’re also both extremely brilliant. At first, Topher is rather distrustful of Bennett and refuses to admit that someone else could be as smart as he is. That distrust eventually fades, and he ends up falling for her… hard.
Unfortunately, that fact alone should have been a cue that things would soon be going terribly, terribly wrong. While working together, the two share a kiss, and Topher walks off to search for a particular tool. In his absence, Bennett is greeted by Dr. Claire Saunders (aka Whiskey). She seems friendly enough at first, but just as Topher is walking back into the room, Whiskey pulls out a gun and shoots Bennett in the head without warning. The event devastates Topher, and he is never quite the same after that. Why do you do this to us Joss Whedon? Better question, why do we keep coming back for more?
